Lip Service: Why are Lip Stains Suddenly so Popular?
Aug 13
If you’ve been using lip color cosmetics for a few years, you may be surprised at the apparent sudden rise in popularity of a product that didn’t catch on when it was first developed. Lately, magazines and makeup artists are raving about lip stain as an alternative to lipstick and lip gloss. Every popular cosmetic brand, from the drug store to the make-up counter, is pushing at least one new lip stain formula in a variety of colors.
Although styles have changed since lip stain first appeared on shelves, it isn’t shifting trends that have finally given this product its due. The source of lip stain’s newly found fame is in the laboratory, not on the runway. While the concept of a matte or semi-matte finish that enhanced lip color without obscuring soft lips with wax or a glossy shine has always had a place in fashion, only recently has technology been able to provide an ideal product.
Early attempts at producing lip stain resulted in a cosmetic that either applied too little color which didn’t last, or one that dried lips. This year’s offerings, however, provide a wide range of hues and tones which blend flawlessly into the natural texture of one’s lips and don’t cause unsightly chapping.
