Perfect Pet Travel

Aug 12

For travelers who take an animal companion along, the key to a safe and trouble free trip is research and preparation.  Many of the things we take for granted when traveling do not apply to our pets, and failure to foresee these differences can be a source of considerable stress and frustration for both animal owners and their animals.

If you are planning to fly with your pet, contact the airline and be certain to have the most current regulations and requirements for pet travel in writing.  If you’re traveling with multiple airlines, do not make the assumption that their regulations are the same.  While certain rules apply to all airlines, individual companies may set their own restrictions and limitations, and may change them frequently.

Research what type of crate or other containment will be necessary for each leg of your journey, and purchase one that fits all requirements.  Do not wait until the day of departure to introduce this equipment to your animal.  Even animals which are accustomed to confinement may find a new crate or cage frightening or stressful.  Introduce the new home away from home several weeks before you leave to avoid stress or fear that might result in your pet being injured or injuring someone else.
